Individual Contributor vs Management roles

One of the most common career development questions is "What is the right time to transition from Individual Contributor (IC) to Management roles?". Some are very driven to "climb the ladder" as fast as possible, while others enjoy doing technical work and want to postpone having to manage others and deal with corporate overhead.
